Gamer's Rant
Sunday, December 25, 2005 | Author: Dav
Greetings,

Well I went out and picked up some games for the holidays (all 3 days of them) and I was mainly looking for something new to play, besides America's Army(AA) that was getting a tad ..um.. 'dry'. Also, I'm downloading, lets call it 'stuff' and I cant download and play AA online at the same time. So offline games it is. I picked up Battlefield 2 (BF2), Project : Snowblind (P:Sd) and Call Of Duty 2 (Cod 2)

Now downt get me wrong, I didnt just go to the store and pick stuff out at random, ohhhh no. I went online, and spent like 20 minutes looking around for fun games (this list were mainly FPS's, but hey, its fun.

Here's a breakdown on how much I liked (or disliked) the 3 games.

Battlefield 2
This game is slick. I've never played BF 1942, but I bet that game was slick too. The problem was, there's nothing really there for the single person maps (I knew the game was more of an Online thing, but I was hoping for something more, like Star Wars Battlegrounds, where there are small storylines joining each level map together. Not very happy with this :(

Pro's:
- Its a FPS.
- Clean, clear and crisp graphics.

Con's:
- No real single player game here
- Seems a little lost joining the single player maps together.
- Its JUST a FPS.

Project: Snowblind
MAN was I wrong on this one. I surfed on to the game webpage, and I thought to myself "Woah, this game looks sweet. LOADS of weapons!" I dont like the cluttred way the inventory is managed, I find myself tossing sheilds and stuff instead of frag gernades and its a general pain. Next would be the light washed out feel to the graphics. I keep thinking of Republic Commando and its bright and crisp graphics, and this doesnt hold a candle to the game. Of course there's nice rain effects, good shrapnel effects and stuff, but its controls and the general game wasnt all that tight. Thats right, I said TIGHT.

Pro's:
- Plenty of stuff to blow up and kill
- Loads of guns and weapons and stuff (YAY stuff)
- Some interaction with objects and stuff that keeps it from JUST being a FPS.

Con's:
- Clunky interface and messy inventory.
- Loads of guns and weapons and stuff (NO yay stuff!)
- Messy way of hunting for a 'save room' to save the game.
- Enemy not clearly defined, and in the washed out graphics, you never can tell where they are.

Call Of Duty 2
NOW THIS IS A GAME.
I've played it for 4 hours straight and I didnt want to stop (but I had to, damn DINNER!). Its smooth, slick, and well presented. The graphics are nice, the audio is amazing, the effects are sweet.
The controls are tight (yeah I said it again)
I am very very pleased with this game, and the amazing part is that the game takes care of the saves as I progress along the game, and I dont even need to blink.

Pro's:
Everything.

Con's:
NOTHING!

Stupid start to the day, the main doors were locked, and our key cards (those who had them) couldn’t get in. Spent 2 hours outside, around the doors and downstairs in the cafĂ©. I really wanted to leave and get some chores done, but I realized one of my chores was to get a DVD of my cousin’s wedding copied (he wanted about 5 copies) but I LEFT THE DVD IN THE OFFICE.

Bah. Got the security company to get here. Might be getting a new door access system.

Greetings,

I was having a slight flu, and we were about to meet a person who dropped by the office. All of a sudden I felt like sneezing, and I did so in my cupped hands. Taking my hands away from my face/mouth, I found them covered in mucus. More like chunky clear uh.. chunks I had sneezed all over my palms.

All of a sudden, the boss calls me over so he can introduce me to the person I was supposed to meet. I mumbled an excuse and ran off to the washroom to get my hands clean.

Weird.

Why tell you this? Why not?

Greetings,

Well I've been holding on to my older laptop for a while now, even when I have a new-ish Centrino laptop provided by the office. The main reason was that I had to do a format of the new laptop's hdd, and I couldnt get the audio drivers to work. I use my machine for alot of things, and MP3's are really helpfull when you're doing a project implementation over a course of 3 weeks. The evenings are rough, and some music helps make it better.

Now I'm stuck with the super huge task of moving all my files and data to the new machine.

This is nicely said in a paragraph, shown below.

Greetings,

Sorry for not posting much (to all 2 people that read this blog anyway) but work has kept me away.

Anyway.

I wake up today and get ready for work, and I notice that my bike has a puncture on the front tyre. So I guess I'm taking dad's bike to work. A few words about dad's bike. Its the basic bike, sort of like mine (its a cup bike, nothing fancy) but the right rear view mirror is cracked, and its cracked so that the mirror is sliglty curved, making the fragments show objects 50% larger then they are. Dad doesnt have a left rear view mirror. SO I cant quite make out objects on my 5 o'clock, and I cant see anything on my 7 o'clock. Much fun. I'm so used to looking at these mirrors that I can barely ride the bike to work, and at one point I was thinking that this ride sure was Foxtrot Uniform Charlie Kilo-ed up.

His brakes stick, and he doesnt have a gear LED indicator. Why, in god's name is this bike not in the junkyard? I'll have a word with dad as soon as he gets back from the UK next week.

GTA: S. Andreas
Monday, July 25, 2005 | Author: Dav
Greetings!

By now I'm sure all of you online already know the issue of GTA S.Andreas and its publisher Rockstar/Take Two. If you DONT know about, then you're a hermit, or just not into games *bah to both!*
Well just to fill you in (for those in the other catagory) GTA:S.A had some code in it that would render the game almost into a porn (or pr0n) sim, but the developers chose to take it out because (I'm guessing here) they wanted a better rating instead of AO (Adults Only) which would allow them to market it to more people.

My take on this is, its a game. So what if its R rated at the moment, kids are still going to get their hands on it. Over here, the rating system on games dont meen squat. I had a cousin that was like 12 and he had GTA:Vice City for the PS2, and I felt like I had to inform his mother about it. Its amazing the words "This game lets you pick up prostitu..." and she's off to grab the CD and toss it out.

:D

I am so helpfull sometimes. So, back to GTA:S.Andreas, as now its come to light that someone out there has gained access to the blocked out scenes and its called the 'Hot Coffee' mod, and it allows you to play the 'mini game' of...um... having some 'hot coffee' *wink* *wink* *nudge* *nudge*

My say is, its a game, kids are going to get their hands on it, modders are going to work on it, so there isnt anything you CAN do about it (I hear the local govt here wants to ban it, good luck trying!)

The worst day so far...
Wednesday, June 29, 2005 | Author: Dav
Greetings!

Well I left for work early today, because I had some items I needed to copy over to the demo laptop and we had a meeting later today, and I to the office around 8.20am. I find the office shutters down but that’s not a problem I think, since I have the office shutter key.

As soon as I open up the shutter, I realize that I don’t HAVE THE OFFICE KEYCARD. My keycard had died a couple of months ago, and I didn’t get a replacement (since usually the office was open by 8.30am, and I got in around 8.50am)

Shrugging, I was about to head over to the café downstairs for tea, when suddenly the alarm goes off.

AND it continues to ring for the next 30minutes.

Long story short, the entire building hates me (cause of the alarm) and when I finally DO get into the office, the MD comes rushing in looking disheveled, and asks WTF’s going on. Apparently the alarm’s rigged to his cell phone and he’s been getting messages and calls from the security company.

Yeah… fun morning…

Gillette Mach3
Monday, June 13, 2005 | Author: Dav
Greetings!

Now before someone accuses me of being an advert whore, I'd just like to say, the following blog was NOT paid for by Gillette.

Yes, I finnaly upgraded my older razor to a Gillette Mach3. Now I've seen the ads, I've heard of the 'amazing 3 blades that allow you to have a smoother and closer shave' but I just didnt need all the hype and the price for the Mach 3 was a pretty penny anyway.

But I got one last night because I plan to keep my older razor (a Gillette Mach 2 Sensor Excel - dont ask me where they get these names from) in my traveling kit as so I'll never be without a shaver.

Well I'm happy with the shaver, its pertty amazing, almost 0 nicks with a brand new blade. The only gripe I have with it is that the blades are now positioned diffrently, and are flat out instead of the standard shaver/razor blade. Its going to take some getting used to, and making precise cuts might be difficult.

Greetings!

Now most of you (the ones that know me) would know that I could not draw even if my life depended on it. Really. I cant. Not at all.

Anyway, as I was browsing the web a few months ago, I came across an amazing blog/webpage that had really cool, weird, intresting images. I put it in my fav list and went about my stuff. I'd check his blog on and off, and maybe drop a comment on an image that I really like, but thats about it. Oddly, the artist has always emailed me back saying thank you for the comment, and is uber polite (yeah thats always cool).

Today, I popped in his site and saw this amazing image of a marble statue (I think) and I just had to comment, and on top of that, I inquired on how he did his work (ie: what he used to get these amazing images out on the net) Below is his reply:

In general terms,
Most of the images were created using Adobe Photoshop, Maya 5.0. Bryce 5, and Painter 8 in one form or another. Essentially they are digital photo collages using mostly photos and textures that I record myself. These images have multiple layers of photos and textures, sometimes quite a number. An online Art and Poetry journal recently ran a feature on my work, if you are interested there is more about the way I work.

You can find that Art and Poetry Journal feature here.

You may also have a look at his Blog (where I first spied his work!) here: Invisible Notes

I might be looking at getting some Star Wars games later this week, maybe even Farcry, I'm not sure yet.

On the other hand, I really am looking forward to getting those short animated Clone War's videos, as soon as I can find a store that stocks them. I've only PEEKED at them, and they seem to be really cool (and along the same lines as Republic Commando)

Gaming onwards! HL2 and Republic Commando
Tuesday, April 19, 2005 | Author: Dav
Greetings,

Well I finished Half Life 2 (HL2). Its the second game I'm finishing on my new gaming PC, (House of the Dead 3 doesnt count!), aside from Star Wars: Republic Commando (SW:RC). Now SW:RC was just ok, I found the controls a little too twitchy and the mouse aiming tended to be a little off, more so when you're in a firefight. I'm not too sure why, it could just be that I have the mouse sensetivity a little too high for SW:RC.

Oddly enough, I feel HL2 out did HL in every way. I'm not just commenting on the graphics (see below for a few random screenshots, sorry I just found the F5 key late in the game). The design of the game, the puzzles (this time around, there was not ONE level where I felt like I had to cheat to finish a level/kill an end level boss)

That I think is the best feature of the game. Well its late, more later!

Dav's Photos!

Greetings!

Some of you (ok ok maybe none of you) will notice another new link on the left hand bar here (under "Davin's Webpage") that says "Davin's Photos".
Well I've signed up with Flickr, and it doesnt seem like a bad place to host pictures. Plenty of options and stuff, which I shall look into later.

For now, enjoy what pictures I have on.

Thursday, April 14, 2005 | Author: Dav
Greetings,

First off, I'd like to say Happy Vaisakhi to all the Sikh's out there.
Maybe this site will shed more light on it.

I know its a short post, but I just got back to the KL office, from Singapore, and I'm tired, and there's ALOT of work

To kill, or not to kill?

do you kill your accounts staff/department/data entry ppl when they say, do a bank transfer, screw that up, pass a journal to fix it, screw up the journal as well, then do a reversal thats built into the system, then pass another journal and mess it up again?
Quake!

Greetings,

There was a slight quake over here around 2.23pm. I actually felt the office building shift a little. We're on a 4 story building, and when we looked down, there were a couple of people already running away. It was a pretty short episode, like less then 10 seconds.

Gah

Jump-starting the Economy
Monday, March 28, 2005 | Author: Dav
Greetings,

I think I've jump-started the Economy over here. I just spent RM2000 on a PC (USD$1=RM3.80). I don't want to think about it, because it feels like a LOT of money.

Even after I got a BASIC video card, it was still pretty expensive.

More updates and pictures when I actually go to pick it up

The funny stuff my cousins think off.
Monday, March 21, 2005 | Author: Dav
Greetings,

Well the other day I had to drop by my cousin's place, for something or another, and I ended up having lunch with all 3 of them. Now don't get me wrong, I love my cousins, but those two doctors crack me up.

The eldest cousin sister was giving us some story about when she went to a nightclub and there were this group of guys beating up this one guy. This got her pissed so she left the club. So she started telling us about how its WRONG to kick a guy when he's down etc etc. By now the rest of us were laughing away, because street fights were rarely 'honourable'. I could just imagine, this guy all bloody on the floor surounded by 5 other dudes, and he looks up and says, "Ugh, remember the code!"

hahahaha just like Pirates of The Carrib.

Fun
